Apple has confirmed that some iPhone Duo units have a problem with the inner folding display, less than a week after its first foldable went on sale in India. The company says only a small number of phones are affected, and that owners who see display problems should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

What happened

Over the past few days, iPhone Duo owners have posted reports on Reddit and social media of damage to the large inside screen soon after buying the phone. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said he verified the problem with more than half a dozen customers, who shared photos or records of their conversations with Apple Support.

In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” and that customers with display problems should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple hasn’t said what causes the fault or how many phones are affected.

The symptoms to look for

Based on owner reports covered by Bloomberg, Digit and Macworld, the problem shows up on the inner screen when you open the phone:

  • A crunching sound while unfolding, followed by a crack along the centre crease
  • A thin vertical line down the middle of the screen
  • A thicker horizontal line or white patches on the right half of the screen

According to Macworld, an iFixit teardown found damage near the point where the display’s flex cable meets the central hinge support, which suggests the hinge area is involved. Apple hasn’t confirmed this.

Is there a free repair programme?

Not formally, yet. Apple hasn’t announced an official repair programme for the iPhone Duo, and it hasn’t said how replacements will work in India. Macworld reports that Apple Stores have been replacing affected units, and that the fix involves replacing the inner display assembly.

Every iPhone Duo sold in India is still well inside Apple’s one-year warranty, since sales only began on October 23. A manufacturing fault like this should be covered by that warranty. Accidental damage, such as a drop, is not covered unless you have AppleCare+.

Apple has also published a support page for iPhone Duo hinge problems. It covers issues like the phone not opening or closing fully, unusual noises and a loose hinge, and suggests removing third-party cases or screen protectors and checking the hinge for dust.

Tip: Before you contact Apple, record a short video of the problem appearing as you open the phone, and keep your invoice handy. A clear video makes it easier to show that the fault isn’t drop damage.

What iPhone Duo owners in India should do

  1. Check your phone. Open and close it slowly in good light and look for lines, patches or a crack along the crease. Listen for unusual sounds from the hinge.
  2. Don’t try to fix it yourself. Opening the phone or using a third-party repair shop could void your warranty.
  3. Contact Apple. Use the Apple Support app or Apple’s India support website, or visit an Apple Store (Apple has six in India) or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Mention Apple’s statement about the inner display issue.
  4. If your phone is fine, keep using it normally, but avoid pressing hard on the crease and use only cases made for the iPhone Duo.

Should you still buy one?

If you were planning to buy an iPhone Duo, there’s no harm in waiting a few weeks. That gives Apple time to explain the cause and to show whether newer stock is fixed. With prices starting at ₹2,99,900, it’s worth being sure. If you buy now, check the inner screen carefully on day one and keep the box and invoice.

The bottom line

Apple has admitted that a small number of iPhone Duo units have a faulty inner display, and it says affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. There’s no formal repair programme or India-specific announcement yet, but every iPhone Duo in India is under warranty. If you own one, check the inner screen now, and if you see lines, patches or a crack, contact Apple Support.
