What’s new

Everything, really. This is Apple’s first foldable, so there is no older iPhone Duo to compare it with. The idea is simple: closed, it’s a small 5.4-inch phone roughly the size of a passport; open, it becomes a 7.6-inch mini tablet. Apple says both screens share the same shape, so apps shouldn’t look stretched or squashed when you switch between them.

Apple claims the inner screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s display, and that the phone is the thinnest iPhone it has made when unfolded. Inside is the same A20 Pro chip family as the iPhone 18 Pro, with a vapour chamber for cooling. Apple also says Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming in a later software update, but it isn’t available at launch.

Two things Indian buyers should note. First, it’s eSIM only, so you’ll need to convert your SIM with Jio, Airtel or Vi before you can use it. Second, the zoom camera is a 12MP 2x telephoto, so if long-range zoom matters to you, compare it with the iPhone 18 Pro models before you decide.

Who should consider it

The iPhone Duo is for iPhone users who want a big screen for reading, video and multitasking in a phone that still fits a pocket, and for whom the price isn’t the main worry. If you mainly want the best iPhone camera or the best value, it isn’t the right pick.

Two close alternatives:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: the most direct rival, with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.5-inch cover screen. It costs ₹1,79,999 for 256GB, about ₹1.2 lakh less than the iPhone Duo, and is lighter at 201g. Pick it if you’re comfortable with Android.
  • Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: no fold, but a big standard screen in the familiar iPhone shape for much less money. It starts at ₹1,79,900 for 256GB.

Tip: If you have an older iPhone to trade in, get its exact trade-in value on Apple’s site before you order. The headline ₹81,500 is the maximum, and most phones will get less, so your real price could be much higher than the “effective prices” quoted online.

The bottom line

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s long-awaited foldable, and on paper it gets the important things right: two 120Hz screens with the same shape, a 2nm A20 Pro chip, IP68 protection and a thin titanium body. But at ₹2,99,900 to ₹4,49,900 it costs far more than the Galaxy Z Fold8, and stock is scarce right now. If you’re curious, try one at an Apple Store first and wait for supply to settle before you pay.
