Apple has launched a new iPad mini in India, and it’s the biggest update the small tablet has had in years. It gets an 8.5-inch OLED screen for the first time, the A20 Pro chip and IP67 water resistance. Prices start at ₹82,900, pre-orders open tonight, and it goes on sale on November 6.

Apple announced the new iPad mini on October 27 with a press release, a day before its “Pro and Tell” event, alongside the M6 MacBook Pro and M6 iMac.

What’s new

OLED screen. This is the first iPad mini with OLED, following the iPad Pro. OLED gives deeper blacks and better contrast than the LCD used before, which helps with films, photos and reading in a dark room. The refresh rate stays at 60Hz, so scrolling won’t feel as smooth as on 120Hz tablets.

A20 Pro chip. The new mini uses the same chip family as Apple’s current Pro iPhones, built on a 2nm process. Apple says it’s much faster for AI tasks, though independent tests aren’t out yet.

Water resistance. An IP67 rating is new for the iPad mini. It means the tablet should survive dust and a short dip in water, which is useful if you read in the kitchen or by the pool.

Speakers in the display. Apple has moved the speakers into the display assembly, which it calls Acoustic Display. We’ll need reviews to know how they sound.

Tip: If you only want a small tablet for reading and video, the older iPad mini may get cheaper now that the new one is out. Check prices again after November 6 before you decide.

Who should consider it

The new iPad mini makes most sense for people who want a tablet that fits in one hand or a jacket pocket: readers, frequent travellers, students who take notes with Apple Pencil, and pilots or field workers who use it for maps and checklists. If you already use an iPhone and a Mac, it fits neatly into the same system.

It’s harder to recommend if you mainly want a big screen for study or work. At ₹82,900, it costs more than many larger tablets, and an iPad Air gives you a bigger screen.

The closest rival in India is the OPPO Pad Mini, an 8.8-inch Android tablet with a matte OLED screen and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip at ₹94,999. It has a slightly larger screen, while the iPad mini starts cheaper and gets Apple’s long software support.

The bottom line

The 2026 iPad mini finally gets an OLED screen, a 2nm A20 Pro chip and IP67 water resistance, and it starts at ₹82,900 in India, with pre-orders from tonight and sales from November 6. It’s the best small tablet Apple has made, but it costs ₹13,000 more than before. Buy it if you really want a tablet you can hold in one hand; if screen size matters more, look at an iPad Air or a larger Android tablet first.
