Prices are from the Google Store and Apple’s US store after the latest increases. Amazon and Best Buy have matched Google’s new Pixel prices, according to 9to5Google.
Price: the Pixel is still cheaper to start
Both phones went up by $100 this autumn, as memory chip costs rose across the industry. The Pixel 10a now starts at $599 with 128GB, while the iPhone 17e starts at $699 with 256GB. If you need 256GB, the Pixel also costs $699, so there’s no price difference at all.
If 128GB is enough for you, and it is for most people who keep photos in the cloud, the Pixel saves you $100.
Display: Pixel wins clearly
The Pixel has the bigger, smoother and brighter screen. Its 6.3-inch OLED runs at up to 120Hz, so scrolling looks much smoother, and Tom’s Guide measured it at 1,896 nits peak brightness against 1,002 nits for the iPhone. The iPhone 17e is stuck at 60Hz, which feels dated next to almost any Android phone at this price, and it still has a notch instead of a small punch-hole.
Performance: iPhone wins by a mile
The A19 chip in the iPhone 17e is much faster. In Tom’s Guide’s tests, it scored roughly twice as high as the Pixel’s Tensor G4 in Geekbench 6 and the 3DMark graphics test. Both feel quick in everyday use, but the iPhone will handle heavy games better and should stay fast for longer.
Cameras: different strengths
The iPhone has only one rear camera, a 48MP main sensor, while the Pixel adds a 13MP ultrawide, which is handy for group shots, buildings and travel. Even so, Tom’s Guide preferred the iPhone’s photos overall. The iPhone also records 4K video at 60fps, while the Pixel tops out at 4K 30fps, according to Android Central.
If you take lots of wide shots, the Pixel is more flexible. For video and straightforward point-and-shoot photos, the iPhone has the edge.
Battery and charging: Pixel for battery, iPhone for MagSafe
The Pixel has a much bigger 5,100mAh battery, and in Tom’s Guide’s battery test it lasted 15 hours 16 minutes against 12 hours 35 minutes for the iPhone. It also charges a little faster with a cable: Tom’s Guide got it to 64% in 30 minutes, against 59% for the iPhone.
The iPhone fights back with MagSafe. Magnetic chargers, wallets, car mounts and stands snap straight onto it, while the Pixel’s 10W wireless charging has no magnets built in.
Tip: Don’t pay full price if you’re with a carrier. Both phones are often heavily discounted or free with a new line or trade-in at US carriers, though that usually locks you into a plan. Our guide to unlocked vs carrier phones explains the trade-off.
Software and updates
The Pixel runs clean Android with Google’s AI features, such as Gemini and its photo editing tools, and Google promises seven years of updates. Apple doesn’t publish an update promise for the 17e, but iPhones usually get around six years or more of iOS updates. Either phone should last most people well over five years.
The bigger question is which system you already use. If you have a Mac, an Apple Watch or AirPods, the iPhone fits in far better. If you use Android or Windows, the Pixel is the easier choice.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Pixel 10a if:
- You want the best screen and battery life for the money
- 128GB is enough and you want to save $100
- You like having an ultrawide camera
Buy the iPhone 17e if:
- You already use other Apple devices
- You want the fastest chip and better video
- You want MagSafe accessories or a lighter, smaller phone
With Black Friday on November 27, it’s worth checking for deals before you buy. After two price hikes, though, we wouldn’t expect either phone to drop back to its spring price.

The bottom line
After the price hikes, the Pixel 10a and iPhone 17e both cost $699 with 256GB, and the Pixel still starts $100 lower at $599 with 128GB. Choose the Pixel 10a for its 120Hz screen, longer battery life, ultrawide camera and seven years of updates. Choose the iPhone 17e if you’re already in Apple’s world or want the faster chip, better video and MagSafe. For most people who aren’t tied to Apple, the Pixel 10a is the better value.
